I’m planning to self-publish soon and I know I need to get my book formatted, but I’m not sure how to choose the right person. I’ve seen people on Fiverr offering quick turnaround for cheap, but others are charging way more and say they offer “professional formatting.” I have also seen that if you use KDP it is done for you and maybe IngramSpark has something similar, but then I see all these people complain about how badly the platforms do it and that you can tell a quality format from the inexperienced that comes out of using the shortcuts.
What’s the real difference between someone who just gets it done, and someone who makes it look truly polished? What does that really mean?
I want my book to look professional, but I don’t know what to look for and I don’t want to spend a fortune on something that doesn’t matter.
A good formatter delivers a file that technically meets platform requirements. A great formatter delivers a file that looks professional, reads smoothly, and matches your brand.
Key differences:
- Attention to Detail: Great formatters catch odd line breaks, awkward hyphenation, inconsistent chapter headings, etc. Margins can make a mess of everything.
- Style Customization: A great formatter adapts your layout to genre expectations and can suggest subtle upgrades (drop caps, spacing, font hierarchy).
- File Versatility: Great formatters deliver both print-ready and eBook-ready versions, and test files on different devices.
Before hiring:
- Ask if they have a guideline you should follow first, for sample pages in your genre.
- Ensure they understand platform-specific specs (e.g., KDP vs. IngramSpark).
- Clarify revision policy—are small tweaks included or billed hourly?
Bottom line: Great formatting elevates your reader’s experience—and enhances your credibility.
